Exploring Maumere: The East Gateway to Flores Island

Maumere is a lesser-known entry point to Flores Island, beside the more popular Labuan Bajo. Though it is the second-largest city, it doesn’t receive as much tourism attention as its counterpart. However, Maumere offers an array of fascinating sights to discover, including the Bugis and Sikka weaving villages, Alok market, Tanjung beach, Koka beach, and the Bunda Maria statue.

Aside from sightseeing, Maumere Bay is a diver’s paradise. Though it was hit by an earthquake and tsunami in 1992, the reef has since recovered and now boasts a healthy population of gorgonians, sponges, groupers, Anthias, butterfly fish, and more. Schools of tuna and carangids can also be found patrolling the depths in search of prey. The charm of Maumere Bay lies in its intricate details, offering a diverse range of dives, including muck, wall, drift, and wreck. Moreover, there are many nearby islands along the coast to explore, with opportunities for snorkeling, island hopping, and relaxing on the beaches.
